Recorded over two nights in November 2008, this reworked and re-ordered Astral Weeks is, by turns, comfortingly familiar and bracingly fresh and new. And so he used the 40th anniversary of his impressionistic song cycle to dust off these venerable tunes before an appreciative L.A. Van had never performed Astral Weeks, his breakthrough 1968 singer/songwriter album, in its entirety. Updating and reconceptualizing one of the most beloved albums of all time was surely a daunting task. Fortunately, Astral Weeks: Live at the Hollywood Bowl reveals a newly energized Van at the top of his game, fully engaged in the proceedings, and ready and able to sail into the mystic. It’s Too Late to Stop Now is an early-career (1974) live masterpiece, but Van’s last concert recording-1994’s One Night in San Francisco-found him curiously uninvolved, turning over many of the vocal duties to his back-up singers. Vince Jones has set the benchmark for Australian jazz vocalist/musicians across a 20 album, international career and his Celtic/ jazz/blues influences provide the perfect blend for his reading of two of contemporary rock music’s greatest works.Van Morrison is a notoriously spotty live performer-irascible, easily bored, hard-headed and occasionally brilliant.
His Music Director Matt McMahon joins him in this homage to Van’s extraordinary repertoire: his most acclaimed album, the magical “Astral Weeks” – a poetic, mercurial blend of jazz, folk and blues – and most commercially successful, the wonderful soul/ jazz-influenced “Moondance”. Now Jones, a remarkable jazz interpreter, has invited a selection of Australia’s finest jazz/rock musicians to form The Astral Orchestra. Australian Jazz legend, Vince Jones was one of them. Both albums had an enormous impact on aspiring musicians and singers around the world. When The Beatles stopped touring and progressed to psychedelic rock and Dylan left folk and went electric, Van Morrison hired some of New York’s finest jazz musicians and recorded two of the classic albums of that golden era – “Astral Weeks” and “Moondance”.
